Tech: Regearing Toyota 8" Clamshell / 8.2" Rear Diff for 2024+ Tacoma & 2025+ 4Runner

As with our previous blog post relating to regearing Nissan diffs, this is a living document / brain dump and will grow as more content is added to it.  This time, we are taking a look at the 2024+ Toyota Tacoma and the 2025+ Toyota 4Runner.  

NOTE: The partnumbers referenced below pertain specifically to a 2025 Toyota 4Runner.  The front differential has been cross referenced as shared between the 4GT and the 6G.  The rear dropout assembly partnumbers are not shared between the 4GT and the 6G.  The housings visually appear similar / same, but the pinion yoke flanges are different sizes - the Tacoma with aluminum driveshaft has a larger flange than the 4Runner with a steel driveshaft.  

 

Toyota 8" Clamshell Front Diff

  • Carrier Break - 3.73 Down / 3.91 Up
  • Notes - Starting with the 4th gen Tacoma and the 6th Gen 4Runner, the casting for the differential housing is modified externally and utilizes different differential mounting brackets compared to that found in previous generations.  Aftermarket p#'s listed in chart below originate from a 2024 Tacoma.  Pinion depth shim located under pinion head race @ 0.0710".  Crush sleeve height @ 1.4085".

  • Notes - Aftermarket p#'s listed in chart below originate from a 2024 Tacoma.  Pinion depth shim located under pinion head race @ 0.0805".  Crush sleeve height @ 1.6125".  Carrier bearing journals are both 50mm / 1.970".
